Foster parents offer children support and stability when they need it most. If you have opened your heart and home to a foster child or teen, you may be wondering what you and other family members can do to help make Valentine’s Day special this year? Here are some sweet and simple suggestions.

Conversation Hearts

Throughout the month of February, shower your foster child with love in the form of paper conversation hearts. Sweeter than candy, this crafty tradition is easy to accomplish with a pair of scissors, some colorful construction paper, a marker, and a roll of clear tape. Use printable heart templates to trace out the shapes before cutting, and then add cute, personalized messages that boost confidence and show you care. Each day, tape a new heart to your child’s bedroom door, or add all of them all at once on the eve of Valentine’s Day, and watch your child wake up to a fun surprise!

Share Some Love

If your child’s school participates in a Valentine exchange, take the time to help your child pick out cards and little gifts, and help them prepare one for each classmate. If your child is creative, you could also purchase supplies to make DIY Valentines to share with friends and family. For ideas and inspiration, click here. The act of making and filling out Valentines can be a bonding experience and lets your child know that, as a foster parent, you enjoy spending time with them and are there to offer assistance when needed.

Sweets For The Sweet

Treat your foster child or teen to some delicious sweets. Simply picking up a dozen Valentine’s Day donuts with red and pink sprinkles will do, or go the extra mile by baking up a batch of tasty Valentine’s Day cupcakes or homemade cookies to satisfy any little sweet tooth. Better yet, prepare a special dinner and bake a Valentine’s Day dessert together! Cooking and baking together helps to create strong family bonds, and it’s a fun activity to celebrate any holiday.
